There will be dozens of event venues from college campuses to Microsoft offices, all buzzing with energy, music, free food and more. New venues being added daily – check back to find the event near you.

Get the app

Download the Wowzapp app (created by students!) to use throughout the weekend. You can post questions for other Wowzapp attendees, stream tech talks happening at other locations and score points through the app to compete against other attendees!

Wowzapp is happening all over the world in 100+ locations. Here in East Region there are several events being held. They don’t all start at the same time, so be sure to click through to the registration page.

Getting Started

Get Windows 8

Remember, to program for Windows 8 you have to have Windows 8. You can buy Windows 8 online from the Microsoft Store, download a 90-day Windows 8 RTM evaluation or download it through an MSDN or DreamSpark Premium subscription.

Get the Development Tools

Don’t forget to grab a copy of the free development tools! You can download Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows 8 for free or download one of the full versions if you have an MSDN or DreamSpark subscription. You can also sign up for a 90-day trial of Windows Azure if you plan on using cloud services for your app.

Jumpstart your Windows 8 development skills so you can hit the ground running at Wowzapp!

  • Windows 8 30 to Launch – Tips, tricks and resources to take your app from idea to store.
  • Programming Windows 8 Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript – I blogged about this free Microsoft Press ebook that provides comprehensive coverage of programming for Windows 8 Apps, by Microsoft’s Kraig Brockschmidt.  This book is about writing WinRT apps using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
  • HTML5 Game Starter Kit for Windows 8 – with the HTML5 Starter kit, how-to instructional video, along with the step by step guide, users will be able to set up a new Windows 8 game project with ease. This content was developed by Petri Tapio Wilhelmsen (@petriw) who also has a great blog.

Apps4VA Hackathons

On October 19-20, Apps4VA will host a series of hackathons across Virginia that challenges participants to create apps that improve education using this data catalog. There will be 5 locations hosting the hackathons:

If you can’t attend in person,  consider entering the Open Competition or contributing to the Idea Bank! Now, for the most important part: the prizes! The grand prize is $1500! At each location there will be a First Prize: $750 and there will be a Hacker’s Choice Prize: $250. In addition, the local hosts and sponsors will have other prizes including the chance to win some Windows Phones for people who develop a Windows 8 app! Yay!!

Windows 8 Hackathon @ Duke

On Friday I’ll be at Duke University in Durham, NC to run a 24-hour Windows Hackathon. Here are all the details:

Our Hackathon is an open Windows 8 code fest. Code to your heart’s content and get familiar with all of the great Windows 8 features. It’s the perfect opportunity to get your dream application underway, or to finish that app you’ve already started.

This 24-hour event will be filled with coding, sharing and plenty of food. Bring your own laptop installed with Windows 8 RTM (90-day evaluation), your apps and your cool ideas and get ready to create! At the end of the hackathon, you’ll get to show-off your app. The best apps will walk away with prizes! (Prepare for the hackathon and come to the Windows 8 Session on Thursday!)

Start Time: Friday, September 21, 6pm

End Time: Saturday, September 22, 6pm

Windows 8 DevCamps and Hackathons: July – September

I’m happy to pass along word that a new series of Windows 8 developer events are coming soon! These are special two-day events, with a DevCamp on day one featuring a full day of sessions plus an InstallFest, followed on day two by a Hackathon with Lightning Talks where you can bring app ideas to life with Microsoft and community experts on hand to help.

Hackathon – Day 2

Our Hackathon is an open Windows 8 code fest, where you’ll put what you’ve learned into practice. Code to your heart’s content, with Windows 8 experts available to guide you through every step of the process. It’s the perfect opportunity to get your dream application underway, or to finish that app you’ve already started.

This full-day event will be filled with coding, sharing, plenty of food, and the occasional Lightning Talk on topics determined by your apps and questions. Bring your own laptop installed with Windows 8 Release Preview, your apps and your cool ideas and get ready to create!

Announcing Metro Friday Hackathons!

Join us on three Fridays in May for Metro Friday Hackathons. We simply want to provide you with an event where you can sit around and co-work on your projects with specific goals in mind. Bring a computer and ideas.

What: Hackathon for Metro Styled Apps on Win8 or Windows Phone
When: 10am – 4pm, May 11, 18, 25 (come and go as you need to)
Where: Microsoft offices in the area, see below for specific dates
Who: Anyone. We’ll be there, you should too!

Ideas on what you could do

  • Publish your app during the hackathon! (this qualifies you for some special drawings!)
  • Evaluate your app for SDK 7.1.1 256mb emulator compatibility
  • Work on a project with experienced folks to help you
  • Jump start your Windows 8 or Windows Phone developer experience, cowork for a Day!
